Unfortunately that would eat up a huge chunk of your budget, so you might want to upgrade the op amps later on down the road. With those op amps and the sound card, you will be hard pressed to find better analog sound anywhere.

You also may want to try and buy 8 AD797 BRZ (You MUST get the BRZ version, it is the best of all the AD797s) op amps and adapters to upgrade the opamps on the card. I highly recommend the HT Omega Halo card if you want amazing sound. The regular one is stereo channels only via analog, although you can still get surround with the optical output if desired. The "XT" verison just has an expansion card with RCA outputs for all surround channels. The HT Omega Halo and Halo XT cards are VERY good cards, probably the best consumer grade cards you can buy in terms of sound quality. Some of the options I'm considering are:ĭon't forget, whatever I buy should increase the size of my E-Peen. I plan to pair the card up with a nice set of headphones. I'm not 100% sure on what the difference is between the different models.Īn Auzentech X-Fi Prelude or other Auzentech card. Here are my initial thoughts for sound card options:

The sound card should have good driver support and it should work well with a wide variety of games, both new and old. The sound card should be fully capable of driving the headset and should not need a separate external amplifier in order to make the headset sound good. The headset should plug into a sound card and not be a USB headset that bypasses the sound card. I don't care if they have an included microphone, I can buy a separate microphone and attach it, I'm sure someone makes something like this. The headphones should be comfortable to wear for long periods of time, with or without glasses (when my contacts have been in for fourteen hours, I switch to eyeglasses for late night gaming). The headphones should be an enclosed ear cup that does not leak noise, so that my wife doesn't have to complain that they are too loud or that the sounds of my game are annoying her.

I'll only watch movies occasionally, if at all. To a lesser extent, for listening to mp3 or streamed music while I surf the web. My budget for sound card plus headset is $400 to $600. Ones that hopefully I will never have to upgrade in the next ten years. I'm looking at buying both a good sound card and a good set of headphones. While I'm waiting for my motherboard to come back from the manufacturer with a BIOS installed that actually supports my CPU, I figured I would do some shopping for sound options. I'm currently putting together a high end computer system.
